EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy approach designed to help the brain process memories and experiences that have gotten stuck. When something overwhelming happens, it doesn't always get filed away the way everyday memories do. Instead, it can stay lodged in a raw, unprocessed way, showing up as anxiety, flashbacks, physical tension, or emotional reactions that feel bigger than the present moment calls for.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, often guided eye movements, to help the brain do what it wasn't able to do at the time: process the experience and move it into a place where it no longer holds the same charge. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to narrate every detail out loud. A lot of the work happens beneath the surface.
It's often used for trauma, but it can also help with anxiety, grief, phobias, and other experiences that feel stuck. If you're curious whether it's a fit for you, that's exactly the kind of thing we can talk through together.
